Hello and welcome! My name is Martha Gizachew. I was born in and raised in Ethiopia and moved to the United States at the age of 9. I relocated to Richmond, VA to pursue Psychology at Virginia State University. My decision to study psychology was driven by the long history of discrimination, colorism, and mistreatment. I experienced firsthand families who were neglected by other family members due to the stigmas and myths shaped by religious beliefs. I quickly realized that I wanted to become part of the solution to combat the myths and stigmas surrounding mental health symptoms and treatments. In my spare time, I enjoy traveling, hiking out in nature, reading, doing yoga, and meditation. I enjoy working with individuals from all walks of life to help them explore what is preventing them from living life to the fullest and creating safe space for them to tell their story. I believe that as people, we were made to connect, build, grow and to be free. My methodology is personalized to every person’s needs, drawing on a range of techniques to help reach their individual goals. I do not believe that any one model has all the answers, but that the most effective therapy is a combination of multiple theoretical perspectives such Person Center Theory, Mindfulness, Emotional Focused and Solution Based etc. As a therapist, I am empathic, understanding, and compassionate. I am easy to relate to and can balance warmth and validation with being genuine and direct. Finding a matching therapist who you feel comfortable with can be difficult and overwhelming. I invite you to reach out today for a free 15-minute consultation. I look forward to hearing from you.
